First, my loyal followers (and I use the plural loosely) — sorry I missed last week’s Thursday post.  It was one of those “It’s Thursday, really?  I thought it was Wednesday all day” sorta days.

Second — I’d like to apologize for today’s post ahead of time — which may seem (even by my standards) tiny and nitpicky but it’s something that’s been on my mind for quite some time.

When did the “flip” happen?

So finally, we have a vote in the House of Representatives for Obama’s Health Care Reform bill:

219 — Yup!

212 — Naw!

And how many Republicans voted for the bill?

0

That’s right.  0.  This bill, apparently, was so reprehensible, so in-arguably soulkillingly, death panely, Socialistically Godlessly-awful that not even one measly Republican thought it was worth voting for. Read the rest of this entry »

Raw Food: America’s Bull Penis

MY GRADE:

It’s amazing to me how the concept of “food” varies so drastically from one culture to the next.

As Socrates once blogged “One country’s insect infestation is another country’s feast.”  (And by “Socrates” I mean “me”)

Some of us look at a bull’s penis and think “Wow, that is a large penis.  I better stay away from that. ” Others, in Taiwan, for instance,  look at it and think Man, I’m gettin’hungry.

Thoughts on the Tea Party Movement

It occurred to me the other day as I was sifting through this slide show of Tea Party protest signs that I didn’t really know much about the Tea Party movement.   From the beginning it’s always seemed a little fuzzy to me.  Were “Tea Baggers” just a bunch of kooks from the get-go or was it a sincere political movement that somehow managed to derail itself?

I mean, they claim to be libertarians, “social conservatives”, not Republicans — although suspiciously the movement  began during the first few weeks of the Obama administration. Read the rest of this entry »

Stadium Proposals

MY GRADE:

I’ve noticed an interesting phenomenon in American culture — proposing to your loved one in a public setting.  I have a feeling this trend stems from our fascination with reality television.  We watch all those other lucky people, like Ozzy Osbourne, Paris Hilton, the guy from Poison, and Sarah Palin (oh wait, she wasn’t on a reality TV show?  She was running for Vice President?  Don’t you mean it wasn’t she wasn’t on a reality TV show yet?). We see how fun it is to chronicle the key moments of your life in the public eye — weddings, anniversaries, drug overdoses, pet grooming –  and we feel a little left out. My Technology Pledge

There was an interesting Frontline special a few weeks ago about the positive and negative effects of technology and the internet on society.  It basically boils down to this — we have no attention span anymore.  And the generation that is growing up with smart phones, laptops, internet, and the soon-to-be-released iPad will have even less attention span.

I’m not sure why I’m even bothering to blog about this — 90% of you have already clicked over to some other website.  But for those “slow-ys” (as I will call anyone who is so lazy that they read more than half a paragraph) I wanted to see if I could instigate some changes in how technology effects my own attention span.  So I’m taking this pledge:

My Oscar Predictions (part 2)

This is where I’ll tackle the least-interesting aspect of the Academy Awards:  the awards.

Best Original Screenplay

Nominees: Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds, The Messenger, A Serious Man, UP.

Predicted Winner: UP.  A mark of good writing is brevity and UP has the shortest title.  I would’ve predicted ‘Inglourous Basterds’but if Quentin Tarantino can’t even be bothered to spell-check the title I can’t imagine the Academy will feel right in rewarding such sloppiness. My Oscar “Predictions” (pt 1)

  1. There will be a moving montage of all the film greats who have passed away in the last year.  The 97 year old Sound Engineer will get the biggest ovation because crowds love sound design.
  2. “Precious: Based on the novel ‘Push’by Sapphire” will win Best Picture because the title just rolls off the tongue (how that got to be the official title of the movie I really haven’t a clue but I’m sure 700 lawyers are involved).  Which will lead to such big movie titles next year as “Transformers 3: Based on Michael Bay’s Need For a New Tennis Court” and “Typhoid Mary: The Movie, Based on Cameron Diaz’s envy of Sandra’s Bullock’s Oscar” Read the rest of this entry »
